Alan Vega's 1980 solo debut emerged while Suicide were being nudged toward a sleeker, disco-influenced direction, but Vega was drawn elsewhere. He leaned into the roots of his own sound _ blues, rockabilly, early rock 'n' roll, and a lifelong admiration for Elvis Presley _ developing new material between Suicide sessions and shaping it onstage.Like his visual art, the album is built from minimal, deliberate layers: raw elements arranged with sharp intent. `Jukebox Babe' captures this best _ a swaggering rhythm and stripped-back pulse that became an unexpected hit in France. Elsewhere, `Kung Foo Cowboy' tilts toward the blues, while `Ice Drummer' pairs melodic vocals with marching percussion and harmonica. `Bye Bye Bayou' offers a eerie take on mutant rockabilly later reimagined by LCD Soundsystem, with The Flaming Lips also paying tribute through their cover of `Ice Drummer'.
