For more than two decades, the members of The Black Crowes topped the best-selling charts and ruled the airwaves, even as hair metal, grunge, and hip-hop bands were making a strong showing and threatened to dethrone them.
With major hits such as Hard to Handle, She Talks to Angels, and Remedy, they achieved fame in the early 1990s, securing their place among the royalty of rock.
But stardom is often fleeting, and in their case, their success began to fade as the madness of the rock world pulled them away from their musical ambitions. Despite the alcohol, drugs, and constant fighting between Chris and Rich Robinson (the rock 'n' roll world's most quarrelsome brothers, with Oasis and The Kinks as their only competition), the band continued touring until 2013. However, that same year Chris Robinson caused such a deep rift among them that The Black Crowes never took flight again.
Steve Gorman, a founding member of the band, was there from beginning to end: during the tours fueled by cocaine and marijuana; through the tumultuous recording sessions; and backstage with music legends such as Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and The Rolling Stones? Steve, the band's drummer, had always intended to keep them all together, but the task proved impossible.
Difficult to Handle is the chronicle of the rise, development, and fall of this great American band. Bands so filled with madness, genius, inspiration, and, above all, self-destructive tendencies no longer exist. But for The Black Crowes and their fans, it was a hell of a ride while it lasted.
