Bad Brains / Rock For Light / Hardcore Punk / Vinyl. After the debut album’s poor sound quality, Bad Brains’ second album arrived like a breath of fresh air. Producer Ric Ocasek is chiefly responsible, but the increased tension and focus also reflect the band’s maturity. From day one, this band was something strange and contradictory: instrumental virtuosos, Black Rastafarians playing hardcore punk, previously the exclusive domain of young, aggressively atheist white amateurs. That last contradiction would become more explicit on “I Against I,” but “Rock for Light” shows the band matching its punk energy. “P.M.A.,” “Joshua’s Song” and “Coptic Times” are typical examples of Bad Brains’ unique blend of punk speed and Rasta ideology. When they suddenly switch to smooth reggae (“I and I Survive,” “The Meek,” “Rally ‘Round Jah Throne” and the dubwise instrumental “Jam”), the effect is like a pleasant musical jolt.
