The debut single from 1980, 'Can't Cheat Karma', was released on Crass Records and 39 years later still stands as one of the finest singles both politically and musically. For the next three singles, Zounds released them on Rough Trade Records, along with their debut album, 'The Curse of Zounds'. 1981's 'Demystification' was a tense and stark masterpiece. It was followed by the haunting Mikey Dread-produced 'Dancing' and then the more straightforward pop of 'More Trouble Coming Everyday'. The final single of Zounds Mark 1 was 'La Vacht Qui Rit', released on the Belgian label Not So Brave in 1983 and originally intended to be a split single with The Mob, but it ended up with two scratchy studio tracks and two rough and raw live tracks recorded in Holland in 1982. Every home should have these essential Zounds recordings.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0805/0475/0407/files/aaa_bcfa6a54-ab08-47a9-825a-2468f00c20d8.jpg?v=1788453422
zounds-can-t-cheat-karma-war-subvert-12
Zounds - Can’t Cheat Karma / War / Subvert - 12"

Amidst the entire British anarcho-punk explosion of the early 80s, Zounds were always a bit of a rare bird. They shared the same scene, ethics, and militancy as Crass or Poison Girls, but musically there was something different about them. Less direct confrontation and more melancholy, more post-punk, more strange groove, and an almost pop sensibility hidden beneath all that political urgency. “Can’t Cheat Karma / War / Subvert” perfectly captures that moment. Three songs that work as a small manifesto against routine, authority, and everyday apathy, but without ever falling into the most basic punk clichés. “Subvert” is still a marvel: nervous, catchy, and with that sense of danger from records that seemed to have been recorded in a hurry because there were more important things to do outside the studio. Originally released on Crass Records, this EP still sounds surprisingly fresh decades later. One of those small records that help us understand when punk was still a cultural, political, and vital tool, and not just an aesthetic.

Includes poster!
