The band, coming from Baltimore and albums like Nonstop Feeling and Time & Space, also didn't seem especially interested in keeping it that way. The dry riffs, fast drums, and Brendan Yates's screams are still here, but synthesizers, more open melodies, atmospheric guitars, and songs that come quite close to pop appear. It's not so much a break with the past as an expansion of resources.

"Mystery" sets out this new situation quite well. The foundation is still hardcore: heavy guitar, fast drums, and a voice that maintains the tension. But the song is built so that the chorus opens up and breathes. Turnstile begin to work with contrasts that had less importance in their early albums. "Blackout" recovers a more recognizable aggression, while "Don't Play" concentrates that energy in barely a minute and a half.

"Underwater Boi" shows the other side of the album. The guitars become more enveloping and the structure has something less urgent. It's not exactly shoegaze, although it uses some of its resources, and it also doesn't stop sounding like Turnstile. The same happens with "Holiday", probably one of the most accessible songs on the album: it maintains the band's rhythm and guitars, but is built around a much more evident melody.

Part of the interest of GLOW ON is precisely how it alternates these two trends. "Humanoid / Shake It Up" returns to speed, "Endless" introduces a more expansive atmosphere, and "Fly Again" mixes both approaches. They don't always work with the same intensity. Some of the shorter songs seem more like ideas or interludes than fully developed compositions, but they help the album not be reduced to a succession of hardcore songs with different tunings.

"Alien Love Call", with Blood Orange, is probably the most evident experiment. The song abandons a good part of the aggression and moves toward a more atmospheric and psychedelic terrain. It could have ended up as a rarity placed in the middle of the album, but it fits because Turnstile had already been preparing that change from the previous songs. It's not necessarily one of the best moments of the album, but it is one of the ones that best explains where they wanted to take their sound.

The type of emotion the songs convey also changes. Instead of focusing mainly on confrontation, GLOW ON repeatedly talks about connection, isolation, movement, and trying to maintain some kind of bond with others. "New Heart Design" and "T.L.C. (TURNSTILE LOVE CONNECTION)" are quite clear examples. The optimism is there, but there's no need to turn it into a philosophy: it's part of the character of the songs.

The production by Mike Elizondo, together with Brendan Yates, allows all these elements to coexist without the album losing too much body. The guitars continue to have weight and the drums retain a good part of the band's punch, but there is more space for voices, keyboards, and effects. The result is quite a bit more polished than their early works. At some moments that cleanliness works in favor of the songs; at others, it takes away some of the sense of danger they had when everything seemed about to fall apart.

The final stretch, with "No Surprise" and "Lonely Dezires", insists on that more melodic direction. The last one, again with Blood Orange, ends the album far from the hardcore of the first few minutes. It's a decision coherent with the album's journey: after having progressively introduced other sounds, Turnstile prefer to end in a quiet place rather than close with another outburst.

GLOW ON therefore works as a transitional album. Turnstile retain a good part of the structure and energy of hardcore, but they stop using it as a limit. Some songs are very direct and others seem more interested in exploring textures; that difference is precisely what gives the album personality, although it also causes some irregularity.

More than a reinvention of the genre, GLOW ON is the moment when Turnstile find a way to incorporate influences that were already around hardcore without having to justify the mix too much. The guitars are still there, the drums still punch, and Yates is still screaming, but now there is also space for slower songs, clearer melodies, and quite a bit less interest in proving that this has to sound one way.

A1 Gravity

A2 Drop

A3 Fazed Out

A4 Can’t Deny It

A5 Bleach Temple

A6 Bad Wave

B1 Blue By You

B2 Out Of Rage

B3 Bring It Back

B4 Addicted

B5 Love Lasso

B6 Stress
