To begin with, it is always somewhat artistic and challenging; SDRE flirts with progressive rock here and there, cleaning up the production to reveal the contrasting layers in their increasingly complex arrangements. There is a droning, almost Middle Eastern feel to some of the songs, highlighting Jeremy Enigk's new taste for spiritual mysticism (although the mantra-like chanting on “The Prophet” becomes a bit uncomfortable). Enigk has matured enormously as a vocalist, applying the lessons learned from his solo project; The strangled roar he frequently used on The Diary is gone, but even as he embraced his softer inclinations, he reined in the excess of LP2 that was falling apart and bordering on the ridiculous. Similarly, the band's musicianship remains increasingly sharp, handling the twisted chord progressions with an easy grace that makes the songs flow smoothly into one another. In fact, almost too smoothly; if the album has a flaw, it is that the climactic peaks do not seem to reach the same heights as on the band's other albums. That is a minor complaint, no doubt, but perhaps that is why How It Feels to Be Something sometimes feels like a race toward the magnificently perfected The Rising Tide, where Enigk's piercing falsetto truly comes to fruition and the band's composition fulfills each one of its anemic ambitions. But that is only in hindsight; taken on its own terms, How It Feels to Be Something is a remarkable step forward for a band that seemed destined to leave its potential untapped.

Possibly the best Sunny Day Real Estate album, or at least the most charismatic, without detracting from the others. Although emo existed (both as a term and a style) before Diary, it had not yet emerged from the deepest underground hardcore punk, with the exception of a few bands on the Dischord label. For all intents and purposes, Diary was the album that made emo accessible, blending its twisted guitars and vocals with an emotional poignancy and more than a touch of Seattle's melodic grunge. SDRE's song structures are much more oblique than, for example, the anemic Pearl Jam, but it is still easy to miss the band's main influences if you do not look for them. Perhaps it is because, deep down, SDRE does not resemble its emo predecessors very much. On the one hand, there are many arpeggiated and quiet passages, and contrasting dynamics; on the other, vocalist Jeremy Enigk is more of a singer than a heart-wrenching shouter, and the underlying tenderness in his voice majestically breathes life into the band's slow and languid melodies. However, while the true heart of Diary resides in its swelling and introspective anthems (such as the band's song, "In Circles"), the more tortured and visceral moments balance things out, preventing the album from wallowing in a melodramatic self-obsession. In retrospect, Diary does not fulfill all its ambitions: there are some unfocused moments that fail to achieve the epic sweep of the album's best compositions. This occasional inconsistency makes it feel a little less accomplished than its advanced post-reunion work, especially because Enigk would become a much more distinctive vocalist. But even if it is not the masterpiece from top to bottom, as its legions of imitators suggest, Diary is still considered the definitive album of the 1990s and an essential introduction to the genre.
