The album combines original songs with radically reinterpreted classics, which the band transforms into ritualistic, minimalist yet powerfully charged soundscapes. Banjo, cello, hurdy-gurdy and bandoneon form an archaic foundation that impressively underpins David Eugene Edwards’ intense vocals. Folklore remains one of the band’s most characteristic and atmospherically dense works: dark, ethereal, hypnotic – an album that dissolves the boundaries between tradition, myth and modern alternative culture.

1

Hutterite Mile

2

Outlaw Song

3

Blessed Persistence

4

Alone and Forsaken

5

Single Girl

6

Beyond the Pale

7

Horse Head Fiddle

8

Sinnerman

9

Flutter

10

La Robe a Parasol

A1 American Wheeze

Written-By – 16 Horsepower, Edwards*

A2 Coal Black Horses

Written-By – 16 Horsepower, Edwards*

A3 Scrawled In Sap

Written-By – 16 Horsepower, Edwards*

A4 Prison Shoe Romp

Written-By – 16 Horsepower, Edwards*

A5 I Seen What I Saw

Written-By – 16 Horsepower, Edwards*

B6 Neck On The New Blade

Written-By – 16 Horsepower, Edwards*

B7 Interview

Interviewee – David E. This cross-pollination pioneered a genre-defying substyle variously labeled “gothic country,” “gothic Americana,” and, within Denver’s fertile 1990s alternative scene, “The Denver Sound”. With a core trio of David Eugene Edwards , Jean Yves Tola and Pascal Humbert consistently at the helm, a shifting cast of collaborators, and a restless drive to push boundaries, they left behind an unmistakable sonic and thematic fingerprint. Whether channeling fire-and-brimstone sermons, haunted ballads, or folk standards reimagined through a modern, tormented lens, 16 Horsepower forged a body of work that is both intimately American and universally gothic in its vision. ‘Olden’ marks the return of one of 16 Horsepower’s most important early works. The collection brings together the band’s first two studio sessions from 1993–94 and showcases them at their rawest and most intense. Classics such as ‘American Wheeze’, ‘South Pennsylvania Waltz’ and ‘I Seen What I Saw’ appear here in their original, untamed versions and are complemented by rare, previously unreleased recordings. Added to this are live recordings from the Mercury Café in Denver, which document the band’s hypnotic stage presence in their early days. Olden is thus not only an essential document of the birth of the “Denver Sound” – but also a seminal work for a new generation of listeners.
