In 1994, they signed with a major label like Epic and released their best work, the present “Pony Express Record”, without losing an ounce of credibility; but Shudder to Think did not reap the sales of other contemporaries who signed to the then-trendy label: grunge.

With those bands they could share some drama, visceral parts and a love for distorted guitars, but Shudder to Think's compositions on “Pony Express Record” were a world apart. The 13 tracks included in this fifth Shudder to Think album, at the antipodes of the 'radiofriendly' concept, fuse elements of post-hardcore, metal, noise and even nascent emocore and jazz with results as unpredictable as they are fascinating.

All these pieces that transcend genre barriers have highly infectious melodies in common and, above all, the formidable voice of the magnetic Craig Wedren, who set the standard with his twists and his way of performing tracks like “Hit Liquor”, “Earthquakes Come Home” and “X-French Tee Shirt”.

The sound of “Pony Express Record”, impeccable but perhaps too ambitious and uncomfortable (due to its sharpness) for the general public, bears the stamp of a renowned engineering duo such as Ted Nicely (Fugazi, Girls Against Boys) and Andy Wallace (Slayer, Sepultura, Nirvana).

Shudder to Think were a 'rare bird' with every indication of becoming a cult band over time. And so it was.
The Washington band, disbanded in 1998 after releasing that second chance on Epic titled “50.000 B.C.”, is now considered by the specialized press and by numerous active bands as one of the most underrated bands of the wonderful 90s decade. And this “Pony Express Record”, their masterpiece, their creative peak. Its strange beauty continues to surprise and captivate two decades later.

This critically acclaimed yet unorthodox major label debut by D.C. alt-rock band Shudder to Think was originally released in 1994 on Epic Records.
