An essential album to understand experimental rock and post-hardcore at the beginning of the century.

I try to keep writing the press sheet while listening to the album, but I can't, it tastes bad to me. My arms prefer to emulate Alfons' broken and millimeter-precise drums, they prefer to imagine that they slide through Edu's precise bass, the words don't write themselves because they prefer to stay in the cave where Cristian sang, away from the microphone and close to a soul that didn't understand the world and chose to create its own.

I prefer not to write and travel to that 2004, when Nisei release their first album, which will be called “More Light”. When they build their own world at the Funhouse, a self-managed festival that turns Alfons' grandparents' farmhouse into an eclectic gathering united by the desire to do and share. The same farmhouse where the chairs from the cover are. The same farmhouse where Nisei have repeated and shaped the songs of the album hundreds of times before recording them on tape. I travel to the last rehearsal: three kids from Vilassar, friends since school, leave tomorrow for the Basque Country to record with Karlos Osinaga from Lisabö. Nerves and excitement, like when Raül from (lo:muêso) proposed to them to record a demo, like the day before that first three-week tour with Maple in 2003, or like the day when BCore confirmed to them that they would release the album.

I travel to the first day I heard “More Light”, twenty years ago. The first thought focuses on the atmosphere, on the dark light that permeates the entire recording, bitter, energetic, emotional. The second thought focuses on the rhythm, on the compact punch that arises from complexity, from nuance, from the dialogue between drums, bass, guitar, trumpet and voice. The third thought looks for references. “We looked for them and we found them,” they themselves say in a song from the following album, “Continents”. Nisei celebrate their references from Washington DC post-hardcore, from the elegant and irreverent Chicago scene, from instrumental dub, from minimalism, from noise-rock, and bring their personal vision. I remember that review in Rockdelux after their concert at the Tanned Ten where they label them -rightly- as “Experimental Blues”.

Nisei release a second album, now with Marc on guitar, they evolve, change languages, play unforgettable concerts and leave it on the night of the Three Kings in 2011, but I prefer to keep talking in the present tense. Because listening to this album again, twenty years later, is celebrating that their sonic discourse still stirs, that their dark light still intoxicates, that their experimental blues from Vilassar still serves us as a catharsis in the face of a world that we still don't understand.

Edi Pou

The first band to approach a traditionally North American musical genre, halfway between Washington DC and Chicago, singing entirely in Catalan.
