As the world awaits the somewhat/later/in/2018 release of their first new album since 2004, please make these Sub Pop reissues yours. Automatic Midnight, Hot Snakes’ first studio album, originally came out in 2000. Both the band and the album began as a @side project@ for John Reis in June 1999, during time off from his main band Rocket From the Crypt. Reis wrote and recorded a batch of songs in San Diego with Delta 72 drummer Jason Kourkounis. To provide vocals for the tracks, Reis called in Rick Froberg, whom he had played with in Pitchfork and Drive Like Jehu from 1986 to 1995. Most of the material from these sessions was used to create Automatic Midnight, which became the first release for Reis’ newly formed Swami Records label. The band’s sound represented a return to the unrealized past of its members> direct, undraped and rock -n- roll while still maintaining the dense and turbulent character of the members’ previous work. In April or May of 2000, Hot Snakes added bassist Gar Wood, found their live sound and established themselves as primo, down-stroke warlords.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0805/0475/0407/files/aaa_8d4b3ebf-897c-4ec4-809a-736edf18ebc5.jpg?v=1788196610
hot-snakes-suicide-invoice-lp-color
Hot Snakes - Suicide invoice - LP - Color

Released in 2002, Suicide Invoice is Hot Snakes' second album and a new demonstration of the band's ability to turn post-hardcore into something physical, dirty, and dangerously addictive. Formed around Rick Froberg and John Reis, two key figures in the San Diego underground thanks to projects like Drive Like Jehu and Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes took all that experience to build a direct, abrasive, and absolutely personal sound.

If Automatic Midnight had presented the formula, Suicide Invoice takes it to an even darker and more dissonant terrain. The guitars are sharp, saturated, and full of tension; the bass and drums move forward with an almost mechanical punch, while Rick Froberg unfolds a vocal performance capable of going from rage to sarcasm and from threat to a strange vulnerability.

But Suicide Invoice is not simply an exercise in speed. Hot Snakes introduce here a slightly broader palette in terms of atmospheres and dissonances, allowing some songs to breathe and develop a stranger and darker tension. The result maintains the urgency of hardcore, but incorporates elements of garage rock, post-punk, and the most twisted rock’n’roll.

The chemistry between the musicians is one of the album's great secrets. Rick Froberg and John Reis build a wall of guitars full of edges, while Gar Wood provides a heavy bass and Jason Kourkounis holds everything together from a powerful and explosive drum kit. Recorded at Drag Racist Studios in San Diego, the album retains a raw and direct sound, perfectly suited to the band's intensity.

With just over half an hour in length, Suicide Invoice does not waste time. Hot Snakes perfectly understand the importance of immediacy, but they also know that intensity can be built from repetition, dissonance, and small changes in dynamics. Every riff seems designed to hit, but behind the noise there is an enormous compositional precision. It is an album that connects the tradition of American hardcore with the wildest garage rock and San Diego post-hardcore, without completely belonging to any of those worlds.

Raw, nervous, abrasive, and full of memorable songs, Suicide Invoice confirms Hot Snakes as one of the most important and personal bands in early 2000s underground rock.
