Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven - 2xLP

Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, Godspeed You! Black Emperor's long-awaited album after The Low, is a double-disc achievement consisting of four works: “Storm”, “Static”, “Sleep” and “Antennas to Heaven”. It is a stroke of luck for any kind of ambient pop, orchestral rock, space rock, or simply lush string arrangements that understand how powerful love, melancholy, and frustration can be. The main complaint of music critics about Godspeed is that they simply repeat the same pattern: they begin the sparse and slow crescendo of compilation and construction. While there are certainly crescendos, there is no predictable pattern among the works of Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Heaven: it is packed with dynamics, unexpected sections, strong emotions, and beauty.

It begins with “Storm”, a leap for GY! It is a breathtaking song that rises with a powerful melancholy, driven by heartbreaking emotions. Outbursts of “Storm” and powerful frustration (each for its own reasons) with majestic shouts of strings, guitars, and layers, resulting in a passionate climactic ascent. Over time, it reduces to the exhausted consequences of the piano, the underlying drones, and the frustrated commentary. The second piece, “Static”, is a wandering, isolationist piece of somber extensions shaded with darker emotions, but the other two works elevate the album back to the impressive standard ensemble. . “Sleep” is an old gentleman who reminds one of Coney Island, and his frank and amusing narration summarizes the recordings of David Greenberger and the scenes from the documentary Vernon, FL. This narration is followed by a slow and melodic piece featuring a pseudo-theremin effect from all the other instruments. “Antennas to Heaven” opens with someone playing acoustic guitar, singing “What will we do with the baby”, soon overwhelmed by the sound, which then gives way to the glockenspiel chorus, and so on.

As in Antennas to Heaven, musical and emotional opposites alternate regularly, and with breath: delicate strings and rock-out, guitar and drums; Fingers and cliffs, dark hallways and blinding sun.

Godspeed You!
