Gang of Four had other plans. Entertainment! was released on September 25 of that year and turned punk into a much more uncomfortable tool: for talking about money, work, sex, propaganda, consumption, power, and all those things that are usually left out when someone decides that a song should be used to have a good time. EMI provided the money; Gang of Four set the terms.

Andy Gill plays guitar as if he hated solos. No flourishes, no walls of sound. A dry, clipped, repetitive riff driven straight into the brain. Dave Allen makes the bass almost the main event; Hugo Burnham plays with a precision that seems mechanical, and Jon King spits out the lyrics as if he were reading a report that infuriates him. The result is post-punk before post-punk had a name, but also funk, dub, reggae, and dance music run through a punk shredder.

“Ether” opens the album and seems to have no intention of being liked. Gill’s guitar doesn’t build a melody: it builds a structure. The bass comes in from below, the drums lay down the ground, and King starts talking about violence and power. Then comes “Natural’s Not in It,” even more direct. The message is in the title itself: the things we are sold as natural—desire, consumption, relationships, hierarchies—usually have a good deal of vested interests behind them. And Gang of Four don’t need to get solemn to say it.

“Not Great Men” continues the demolition. It isn’t great men who make history, but the structures that allow certain people to have power. “Damaged Goods” changes the setting and puts sex and relationships into the same analytical machine. Love, merchandise, possession, exchange: everything can become a product. It is hard to imagine a more punk way of tearing down the romantic idea that human relationships exist in a space completely separate from the economy.

The music doesn’t let you rest either. “Return the Gift” and “Guns Before Butter” work on rhythmic tension. There is no guitar trying to cover it all. There is space. Lots of space. And that is precisely where the violence lies. The bass pushes, the drums cut, and the guitar appears and disappears like a razor blade. It is music you can dance to, but dancing here seems almost like a political act. You can move your ass and think at the same time. A combination that rock has rarely managed without making a fool of itself.

“I Found That Essence Rare” is probably the album’s most immediately catchy moment. The riff gets stuck in your head, the rhythm drives forward, and the song seems almost too fun for everything it is saying. But that is precisely Gang of Four’s trap: the critique comes disguised as a dance song. “Glass,” “Contract,” and “At Home He’s a Tourist” continue to dismantle everyday life from the inside. Work, contracts, consumption, television, relationships: there is no need to invent a dystopian future when the present already functions perfectly as one.

“5.45” is something else. Political violence appears directly in the foreground, and the song uses that almost obsessive repetition to turn war into a physical experience. And then comes “Anthrax,” with its deliberately unpleasant title and its almost anti-romantic structure. While King talks about love as a form of violence, Gill plays guitar that seems to refuse to accompany a conventional love song. It is a rather elegant way of saying that even our feelings are full of learned contradictions.

The extraordinary thing is that Entertainment! does not sound like a musical pamphlet. It sounds like a band that has understood that form is also political. A guitar does not have to behave like a rock guitar. The bass can carry the song. Drums can be dry and repetitive. Lyrics can talk about capitalism without becoming a rally. And a song can be catchy without becoming harmless music.

Recorded at Workhouse Studios in London over five weeks in the spring of 1979, the album was produced by Andy Gill, Jon King, and their manager Rob Warr. They did not need an outside producer to tell them how to sound. They were quite clear about what they wanted: precision, space, tension, and no excesses.

Entertainment! is still uncomfortable because it does not allow you to easily separate the music from the world it describes. It does not talk about an abstract system out there. It talks about the things we do every day: working, buying, having sex, falling in love, obeying, consuming, competing. And it puts them all in the same bag to ask you what the hell you are doing exactly.

Punk without speed. Funk without a party. Politics without a rally. Rock without epic. Gang of Four took everything a guitar band was supposed to do and decided to do it differently. Entertainment! does not want to entertain you too much. It wants you to dance while you realize that perhaps the problem is precisely what you were dancing to.
