A constant source of imitation for so-called "noise rock" bands, it has yet to be surpassed in its nihilistic joy.

Recorded between October 1980 and August 1981 and released in 1982 by the essential Subterranean Records label, this album functions as a dense, chaotic mass of individual personalities: the searing bass eruptions and dual vocals of Will Shatter and Bruce Loose, Ted Falconi's icy guitar strumming, and drummer Steve DePace's relentless rhythm. At times playful and taciturn, paranoid and absurd, Generic charts a deliberate path that willingly risks destruction.

In the early 80s, in punk, when the norm was "faster, shorter, louder," Generic subverted the nascent hardcore scene with a strict regimen of slowness, heaviness, and punch. Its lyrics are somber, yet hauntingly beautiful. "Ever" sets the tone with its characteristic restraint: "Have you ever wished the human race didn't exist? And then you realize you're one of them too?" The final track, "Sex Bomb," is a dizzying 8-minute epic with repetitive bass, saxophone accompaniment, and electronic effects that simulate the bursting of bombs.

Many indie bands have tried to recreate Flipper's mix of acid guitar, metallic bass, and sardonic, brilliant lyrics, using the seemingly simple formula they themselves created; however, the effect usually leads listeners back to Generic. While most of their contemporaries wither under direct comparison, No Trend, Butthole Surfers, feedtime, and Church Police are some of those who can withstand the icy heat.
