Released in 2002 after a period of creative uncertainty and a longer-than-usual hiatus, the album found the band reclaiming the spontaneity and energy of their early years, but with a compositional maturity that allowed them to look far beyond the Britpop with which they had always been associated.

The first thing that stands out is its vitality. Few bands with nearly a decade of career could sound so hungry and fun. From the brief introduction of “Za” to the expansive closing of “Run”, the album is full of changes in direction, melodic hooks, and a constant sense of movement. Songs like “Rush Hour Soul”, “Seen the Light”, “Grace”, or “Brecon Beacons” show a band that has mastered the art of writing immediate anthems without sacrificing personality.

Musically, it is an album that absorbs influences from the seventies—T. Rex, Mott the Hoople, The Kinks, or Bowie—and filters them through the nervous, playful energy that always characterized Supergrass. However, it never sounds like a mere exercise in nostalgia. Even in its most glam or power pop moments, the band maintains an unmistakable identity.

Perhaps its greatest virtue is precisely that sense of freedom. After a third album that was more psychedelic and experimental, here they seem to have decided to keep only what made their songs better: huge melodies, memorable choruses, and an enthusiastic performance. Some critics at the time considered it uneven, but over the years many fans have championed the album as one of the most fun and consistent works of their entire career.

Heard today, “Life on Other Planets” retains an admirable freshness. It does not possess the historical importance of their two great classics or the ambition of some later works, but it does have something equally valuable: a collection of magnificent songs performed by a band that sounds happy to be playing them. A bright, energetic, and tremendously enjoyable album that deserves much more recognition than it usually receives within the Supergrass discography.

Formed in Oxford in 1993, Supergrass—winners of BRIT, Q, NME and Ivor Novello awards—are one of the most influential bands to emerge in the 1990s.
