In 1983, the D.C. punk scene had grown and changed, and with it, the focus for many people had been lost. The violence and nihilism that had become associated with punk rock, largely due to the media, had begun to take hold in D.C., and many of the older punks suddenly found themselves rejected and discouraged by the scene in their hometown.

It was a time of redefinition, and Rites of Spring led the charge. They not only challenged the macho attitude that had become so common within the punk scene at the time, but, more importantly, they challenged the musical and stylistic status quo. Fans of the band never missed a show, as ROS played every concert as if it were their last. The results could be explosive, often resulting in the destruction of their equipment, and this may be one of the reasons they only played 15 shows. It was the boldness of this band that truly contributed to the wave of energy, often referred to as “Revolution Summer,” that swept through the D.C. scene in 1985.

Rites of Spring released a full-length album, “End on End,” and a 7”, both on Dischord Records. Brendan and Guy later played in Fugazi, and Michael played under the name Mighty Flashlight.
