Released in 1983 by Ruthless Records, Basement Screams is a six-song EP that captured the band at their most primitive, laying the groundwork for a sound that would ultimately decisively influence the development of American melodic hardcore and post-hardcore.

Formed by Jeff Pezzati, Santiago Durango, Camilo González, and Jim Colao, the early Naked Raygun already displayed an unmistakable personality. Their music drew from the urgency of hardcore but incorporated angular melodies, less predictable structures, and a post-punk sensibility that distanced them from speed for speed's sake. Tim Powell's production keeps that sense of immediacy intact: harsh, raw, and unadorned, as if the band were playing in the basement that gives the album its title.

Songs like “I Lie”, “Bombshelter”, “Tojo”, “Swingo”, “Mofo”, and “Potential Rapist” condense a huge amount of ideas into barely twelve minutes. Durango's sharp riffs, Pezzati's distinctive phrasing, and a relentless rhythm section build a sound that is as aggressive as it is melodic, capable of combining the rage of punk with an unexpected ability to create memorable anthems. Although echoes of the more straightforward hardcore of the early eighties are still perceptible, Basement Screams already anticipates many of the hallmarks that would make Naked Raygun an essential band: intelligent lyrics, a deeply urban approach, and a very personal way of understanding melody within punk. Their influence can later be traced in bands like Jawbreaker, Hot Water Music, The Lawrence Arms, and even much of the Chicago punk that emerged in the following decades.

Reissued in 1999 with abundant additional material from the 222 S. Morgan Street sessions, the EP allowed for the rediscovery of one of the most important recordings of American punk in the eighties and reaffirmed Naked Raygun's pioneering role within the Chicago scene. Heard today, Basement Screams retains all its power. Direct, urgent, and surprisingly advanced for its time, it remains a key piece for understanding the evolution of American punk and the birth of one of the most influential bands in the eighties underground scene.
