Released at the height of American hardcore and put out by SST, they hadn't yet fully developed the desert, psychedelic cowpunk sound that would make them timeless a few years later. What we find here is something much wilder, weirder, and more unpredictable.

There's hardcore, yes, but also noise, paranoia, absurd humor, warped country, experimentation, and a constant sense that the band is about to derail. It's as if Black Flag, Captain Beefheart, and a bunch of kids who'd smoked too much had decided to record an album in three days without worrying too much about the consequences. And that's precisely where much of its charm lies.

Listening to it today, it's fascinating to see how much of the DNA of American alternative rock that would explode years later was already evident here. Without the Meat Puppets, it would probably be difficult to fully understand Dinosaur Jr., Nirvana, or much of the underground sound of the 90s. An uncomfortable, chaotic, and absolutely free album. One of those that might not click at first, but once it does, it never lets go.
