A large part of that change, of course, was the fact that Smith had first-rate finances and equipment to work with for the first time; this allowed him to merge his melancholy and slightly punky people with the rich sounds of pop artists like the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Smith continues in that direction for the follow-up, Figure 8, an even more detailed effort in sound, laden with orchestrations and inventive production touches. With a couple of exceptions, the sound of Smith's melancholy has changed largely from nervous to sighing grace, although his lyrics are as dark as ever. However, even if the theme remains in familiar territory, the backing tracks are another matter: a magnificent kaleidoscope of layered instruments and sonic textures. Smith launches his songs with confidence and imagination, and that new sense of mastery is, ultimately, the real emphasis of the album; Apparently there is a new and subtle wrinkle in the sound of each song, and yet, it is easily recognizable as Smith's trademark. Even if it is a very impressive statement overall, Figure 8 is not the masterpiece it wants to be, there is something in the rhythm that makes the recording seem long (at over 52 minutes, it is the longest album in Smith's catalog). ), and sometimes it can drift away from the listener's awareness.
